''I wouldn't have cared if it cost us $10,000 to protect our son, I would do it. But I think the U.S. has an obligation to make sure they have this equipment and to reimburse for it.''
-- A former Marine who spent nearly $1,000 two weeks ago to buy body armor for his son, a Marine serving in Fallujah

WASHINGTON (Sept. 29) - Nearly a year after Congress demanded action, the Pentagon has still failed to figure out a way to reimburse soldiers for body armor and equipment they purchased to better protect themselves while serving in Iraq.

Soldiers and their parents are still spending hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars for armor they say the military won't provide. One U.S. senator said Wednesday he will try again to force the Pentagon to obey the reimbursement law it opposed from the outset and has so far not implemented.

Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., said he will offer amendments to the defense appropriations bill working its way through Congress, to take the funding issue out of the hands of Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and give control to military unit commanders in the field.

"Rumsfeld is violating the law," Dodd said in an interview with The Associated Press. "It's been sitting on the books for over a year. They were opposed to it. It was insulting to them. I'm sorry that's how they felt."

role model

WASHINGTON - President Bush decided Wednesday to waive any financial sanctions on Saudi Arabia, Washington's closest Arab ally in the war on terrorism, for failing to do enough to stop the modern-day slave trade in prostitutes, child sex workers and forced laborers.

wrath of the gods

unbelievable ... no, its not global warming. according to some Conservative Christians, the source of the hurricanes is ........... *duhn duhn duhn*

yes god. some conservative christians are again claiming that the hurricanes are punishment for various sins and assorted abominations from an angry god ... so instead of looking at what the corporations are doing to the environment *coughglobalwarmingcough*, they blame the gays, the liberals, feminists, & the pagans ...

but let's analyze this for a moment ...

the hurricanes are assaulting the gulf coast states ... those states are overwhelmingly conservative ... all voted for BUSH ... louisiana, florida, texas, mississippi ... all have histories of human rights violations [just look at the civil rights movements, the murder of a black man in jasper, tx, jeb bush, etc etc et fucking cetera] ... so perhaps this "attack" by the gods is in fact directed against CONSERVATIVES for fucking up this great nation by allowing their corporate friends to pollute the water, soil, and air so they can pack more money into their swollen pockets, for deception, lies, illegitimate wars, neglect, discrimination & stupidity ... thus exposing them to the WORLD for exactly what they are, what they've done, and what they will continue doing if they are allowed to do it.

what about the idea that the GODS are punishing GW BUSH for his ineptitude? i mean, with the attacks on Sept 11, the war in Iraq, & now the storms -- roughly 6000 americans have died on his watch due to attacks and war and disasters that some believe could have been prevented or lessened had he and his administration taken the signs and warnings seriously.

makes just as much sense as blaming the liberals and pagans and gays and feminists doesn't it?

let's review, shall we?

AP -- A Dallas TV station WFAA reports 24 people killed when bus loaded with Hurricane Rita evacuees erupted in flames south of Dallas.
-- yeah, those elderly folks were probably all gays and pagans. and if we follow the conservatives line of thinking -- they deserved it. right?

CNN --
Rising water due to Hurricane Rita washes over levee in New Orleans hard-hit 9th Ward, Army Corps of Engineers says.
-- wow, that christian/hebrew god YWH really has a temper, doesn't he? i mean, when he throws a tantrum he goes all out ... HE doesn't stop once he's got us wounded ... none of that sissy stuff for Him ... nope ... HE keeps kicking & kicking us when we're down. yep, that'll teach us. [/sarcasm]

so how do we repent? recall GW Bush? stop our slow slide into a Theocracy? tighten restrictions on corporations to stop polluting the globe? shift to a cleaner source of energy?

here's what i think ...

if the CONservatives are right & its the Hebrew God, then HE's either blind, stupid, or needs to take a refresher course in Geography ... cuz if HE really wanted to punish this country for carnal sins & debauchery ... then HE would be sending those hurricanes to Washington DC & wipe out the lot of them ...

or maybe its like Kurt Vonnegut said ... that the Earth is just cleansing itself of parasites ... using its immune system to destroy the virus of man ... nature is its anti-bodies ... we are the target.

or maybe SLAYER is right ...

its a little hard for me to believe that any "loving" god would murder "his" children just to prove a point ... we could consider global warming as a cause ... we could consider nature cleanses itself as all living things do ... or we could follow the CONservative line of thinking and consider that this is, in FACT, a sign from the Divine ... attacking the southern states where sins & crimes against the poor, minorities, and free thinking are commonplace ... where they voted to keep this idiot [p]Resident for another term ... so HURRICANES are sent to devastate the area ... in order to AGAIN show the incompetence of this [p]Resident & politicians in general ... to prove that even after SEPTEMBER 11th, after almost 2000 American soldiers dead in Iraq & thousands maimed & wounded -- WE ARE NOT SAFER.

maybe this is a sign that our nation is headed in the wrong direction ... that our Democracy is in danger of becoming a Theocracy ... that we should be standing up, speaking out, & fighting back ... maybe what should be said is .....

"Hey George! God's calling. & She's fucking pissed!"

maybe? seems just as plausible as blaming the counter-culture ... don't it?

milk of regret

we worked on this song again today ... its really something very special to me ... a part of my life captured within the chaotic confines of song & rhythm ... i am thinking of creating a 3 song demo by the 2nd week of October ... a bit of pre-production magick ... call it DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ...

1. March of the Martyrs
2. Milk of Regret
3. Religion Kills

buried alive

i had forgotten this section of our site ... funny enough, its still just as applicable as it was when we wrote this song in late 2003 ...

Bush Lied, Soldiers Keep Dying.

1,908 U.S. Military Fatalities in Iraq (thru today)
14,265 U.S. Military Maimed in Iraq
29,187 Iraqis Reported Killed (thru today)

i understand that waiting for the perfect moment is important ... i understand that good things come to those who wait ... i understand that patience is a virtue ... that things happen as they should ... but ... its sooooo very difficult for me to wake everyday brimming with song ideas, melodies, messages, rhythms, styles, and emotions that need to be given life only to have to wait until all things are put in place by people other than me ... schedules, interest, funding, the fucking alignment of the planets, the strength of the west wind, the direction the raven is flying, or whatever whim the gods and muses are enjoying at the moment ...

so i will keep filling my books with words & song ... i will keep recording the melodies in my digital recorder ... keep building ideas in GarageBand ... keep waiting and keep preparing ... so that when my time has come ... there will be no more delays ... no more waiting.

resolutions of inquiry

village voice - Republicans on three separate congressional committees this week derailed three formal "resolutions of inquiry" by Democrats that would have required the Bush administration to turn over sensitive information and records relating to the outing of CIA officer Valerie Plame.

Had the resolutions of inquiry been adopted, they would have led to the first independent congressional inquiries of the Plame affair, and perhaps even the public testimony of senior Bush administration aides such as Karl Rove, the White House deputy chief of staff, and I. Lewis (Scooter) Libby, the chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, about their personal roles.

As things currently stand, a special prosecutor, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, continues to conduct a grand jury investigation of Rove, Libby, and other White House officials, but the public has gained scant insight into what, if anything, that inquiry has uncovered.

top bush official arrested

washingtonpost - The Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal reached into the White House yesterday, picking off President Bush's top procurement official -- who just barely had time to resign before being arrested.

The federal charges against David Safavian stem from his tenure as chief of staff of the General Services Administration, predating his arrival at the White House a year ago. But his arrest nonetheless draws renewed attention to the ongoing corruption and influence-peddling inquiry swirling around Abramoff, a lobbyist well known for his connections to conservative Republicans in the White House and Congress.

And for a White House so desperate to build public confidence in its ability to respond to the Gulf Coast disaster, it doesn't exactly help that the man who up until Friday was overseeing contracting policy for the multi-billion dollar relief effort has now been charged with lying and obstructing a criminal investigation.

Goddamnit, an entire generation of pumping gas, waiting tables, slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We are the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no great war, no Great Depression. Our great war is a spiritual war. Our Great our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires and movie gods and rockstars, but we won't...And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very...very...pissed off."

one bad apple? nah. the whole bunch is rotten.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The youngest son of Florida Gov. Jeb Bush was arrested early Friday and charged with public intoxication and resisting arrest, law enforcement officials said. John Ellis Bush, 21, was arrested by agents of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission at 2:30 a.m. on a corner of Austin's Sixth Street bar district, said commission spokesman Roger Wade.

The nephew of President Bush was released on $2,500 bond for the resisting arrest charge, and on a personal recognizance bond for the public intoxication charge, officials said. Wade said he had no further details about the charges. Gov. Bush and his wife, Columba, appeared Friday evening at a museum reception in Miami.

"My son's doing fine. It's a private matter. We will support him. We're sad for him. But I'm not going to discuss it on the public square with 30 cameras," the governor told reporters. It's not the first time Florida's first family has experienced legal problems with one of their children.

Noelle Bush, the governor's daughter, was arrested in January 2002 and accused of trying to pass a fraudulent prescription at a pharmacy to obtain the anti-anxiety drug Xanax. She completed a drug rehabilitation program in August 2003 and a judge dismissed the drug charges against her.

no independent commission?

WASHINGTON - Senate Republicans on Wednesday scuttled an attempt by Sen. Hillary Clinton to establish an independent, bipartisan panel patterned after the 9/11 Commission to investigate what went wrong with federal, state and local governments' response to Hurricane Katrina.

The New York Democrat's bid to establish the panel — which would have also made recommendations on how to improve the government's disaster response apparatus — failed to win the two-thirds majority needed to overcome procedural hurdles. Clinton got only 44 votes, all from Democrats and independent Sen. Jim Jeffords of Vermont. Fifty-four Republicans all voted no.

"Just as with 9/11, we did not get to the point where we believed we understood what happened until an independent investigation was conducted," Clinton said.

violence gives us cloud cover.

some days nothing makes sense. the world feels soggy. the air is congested & blended [this morning] with a foul phantom floating between us. cars & foot traffic invade our air space. mean glares & puppy dog stares beam out like radiation. the grid i call a hole which has become my home quakes to the fickle fables of the crowding gods and gorgons. snakes and fates invade. my head hurts & aches in choppy splashes and booming thunder to the falling vocabularies eating their way thru her nicotene philosophies.

violence gives us cloud cover. i try and try but i can't tune out the frequency. sentence after sentence of wet-choking, sputtering gag heaves, & cough after cough after cough of fire and brimstone. is it another fist of words? domestic fu? another morning without breakfast. only silence. and questions. battered archeology. digging and digging. who do u think u are? wtf are u doing? why am i here? are you ready? can we go? have u seen my shoes?

i have no answers to offer.

this neighborhood is going to shit. her phone rings and the voicemail alert sings. across the hall someone is relentlessly IMing with the volume alllllthhheeewaaaay ...up. and i'm just trying to finish this entry. before i lose my trembling grip on reality and sifon thru the tools of war scattered thru-out this place and beat the lot of them til they piss blood and the rage dissipates. the fog is coming. the unending humming behind my eyes. the sense that i am not well. and will never be. until ... i finish ... this paragraph ... of unabated wrath ... and laugh ... in the milky bath of the throbbing aftermath.

why can't we just RECALL the lot of em? round up ahnuld, geeduhbya, chainey .... then rally the citizens & have a good ole fashioned american political revolution .... "fire the bums", and start over. that would teach em.

below are [p]Resident gw Bush's words, taken from a news conference where he basically says [i think] there was a moment of relaxation after the levees broke ... & then ... he apparently doesn't even know the FEMA director "Brownie" [as he calls him] resigned today ... geezus ... doesn't prepare us for 911, doesn't respond to the hurricane disaster, doesn't know his FEMA director quits ... is there anything he does know?? i bet if u asked him what his last golf score was, he'd know ... or how many ludes u can take with a bottle of scotch before you black out ... ha. unbelievable.

edit:>>> ok, i have re-read that first bit [below] several times and its absolutely incomprehensible to me that the LEADER of our nation, AMERICA, is an ivy-league graduate, is a rich-geezer from one of the most priveleged and powerful families on the planet can barely form ONE coherent, adult thought ...

Bush today:

"What I was referring to is this: When that storm came by, a lot of people said we dodged a bullet. When that storm came through at first, people said, Whew. There was a sense of relaxation. And that’s what I was referring to.

And I myself thought we had dodged a bullet. You know why? Because I was listening to people probably over the airwaves say, The bullet has been dodged. And that was what I was referring to. Of course, there were plans in case the levee had been breached. There was a sense of relaxation at a critical moment."

Bush’s Fluctuating Degree of Ability

Bush at 3:39 pm EST:

Question: Have you accepted the resignation of Michael Brown or have you heard about it?

Bush: No, I have not talked to Michael Brown or Mike Chertoff – that’s who I talk to. As you know, I’ve been working.

Bush at 3:42 pm EST:

"I can do more than one thing at one time. By the time I’m finished president, I hope you will realize that the government can do more than one thing at one time, and individuals in the government can."

Bush Not Aware That His Own FEMA Director No Longer Works For Him

“Maybe you know something I don’t know.”

That was President Bush’s reponse to a reporter who asked whether he had heard that his own FEMA director, Michael Brown, resigned today from the administration. For the second time today, Bush demonstrated that the Commander-in-Chief is not on top of things.

25 Mind-Numbingly Dumb Quotes About Hurricane Katrina And Its Aftermath

2) "What I'm hearing which is sort of scary is that they all want to stay in Texas. Everybody is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway so this (chuckle) – this is working very well for them."

4) "We've got a lot of rebuilding to do ... The good news is — and it's hard for some to see it now — that out of this chaos is going to come a fantastic Gulf Coast, like it was before. Out of the rubbles of Trent Lott's house — he's lost his entire house — there's going to be a fantastic house. And I'm looking forward to sitting on the porch." (Laughter)

"When the cult of Osiris finally gave way to the new man-god, Jesus Christ, the Egyptians embracing Christianity found that the worship of Osiris and Jesus were compatible if not similar. Isis and her child Horus were identified with the Virgin Mary and the Christ child. In apocryphal literature of the first few centuries following the conversion of Egypt to Christianity, several legends of Isis were transferred to the Virgin Mary, as well as one of the goddess's epithets, Mut Netchet, which became Theotokos, or Mother of God, a very old and common title of Isis.

It was not until the reign of Justinian [AD 525-565] that the cult of Isis was abolished. In AD 641 when Byzantine control was destroyed by the Arab conquest of Egypt, Islam was brought to the land."
